Never too old to learn

“Johnnie” Johnson Housing Trust resident Mrs Gladys Angus, who has just reached the age of 98 years, is an inspiration to the older members of her generation.  

 

She’s proven you are never too old to use computers. She has also shown what wonderful benefits they can bring to people’s lives.

 

“Johnnie” Johnson housing has teamed up with the government backed initiative, Get Digital, to provide computers in 11 of their retirement schemes across the country. When a smart new computer, laptop and printer were installed at Johnson House near Morpeth, where Gladys lives, she eagerly looked forward to learning how to use it.    

 

Since late last year, Gladys has attended the Get Digital course by tutor Anne Donnelly.   Young people have also come from the local school to help with computer training.

 

Thanks to the training Gladys is now able to use the computer regularly to keep in touch with family and friends, watch TV programs she has missed, shop via the internet and even enjoy live video calls to her daughter in Canada and her grandson in France!

 

Gladys says ‘The computer in our scheme lounge has given me a new lease of life. I’m now much more in touch with family who live so far away. It’s wonderful to see them talking in front of me- so much better than a letter.’

 

Her enthusiasm is invigorating and inspiring, so much so, that her friends are having trouble keeping up with her rate of progress!
