JJHT welcomes a different type of garden guest!

25 March 2011
Tenants at Ventura Court in New Mills, which is situated in a semi-rural location not only enjoy the open aspect views but benefit from having a large communal garden. They recognise that the actions they take in their little corner of High Peak can impact on the wider environment.
The tenants are actively trying to encourage wildlife into the garden and the visitors include a vast array of birds – which are fed daily as well as squirrels, a badger and a fox. The garden also has a bug house to attract ‘good bugs’ such as Ladybirds, lacewings and ground beetles. These help tackle the more harmful creatures that blight the garden. Sandra Bradley, a tenant as the scheme said:
“We really enjoy the outside space we have here, by encouraging these animals into the garden the tenants benefit from watching them from afar but also in the long run the environment will benefit too as we are providing a safe habitat.“
Tenants are also enjoying the more traditional forms of gardening that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The scheme has recently had raised beds built which will help the tenants grow their own herbs and vegetables. This is better for the environment as no miles are generated getting the food to the table.
Only time will tell how climate change will impact upon us but these tenants are recognising their impact and how change and resourcefulness can be vital in the protection of their garden, the plants and the creatures that live within it.
