Hawkinge House Open Day

22 July 2009

Never were there such devoted sisters!

“Johnnie” Johnson Housing Trust retirement scheme Hawkinge House in Chesterfield is home to some very special tenants! The term ‘keeping it in the family’ is certainly relevant as three sisters have all come together to live at the scheme in separate flats all under one roof.  This is a rarity as the sisters are from a family of 10 and have not all lived together since they were young children.

Oldest sister Kathleen who is 94 lived nearby to Hawkinge House in a local based council scheme.  When the council scheme announced its closure, rather than wait to be re-housed Kathleen, with the help of younger sister Betty (who is 79), moved into Hawkinge House as she loved the area and its surroundings in Chesterfield.

Betty and her husband Eric share a flat as the scheme comprises both single person studios and larger flats for couples.  The last of the 3 sisters to move in was middle sister Joan, who is 85.  Joan previously lived in a very large house which proved to be too big maintain alone.  Having her 4 children and now even lots of great grandchildren all local to the scheme helps Joan to see them and her two sisters more regularly.  Despite the 3 sisters being of different ages, they like to meet up in the common area and join in with all the activities.

Hawkinge House is holding an open day BBQ, charity stalls and balloon race on 15 August from 2pm until 5pm for anyone interested in retirement living.  Come along meet the tenants and join in with the fun!  For more information on the open day or retirement living please call Scheme Manager Sandy on 01246 233796.
