
A Taste of the Caribbean in Marple
Tenants and staff from "Johnnie" Johnson Housing Trust and Stockport Council joined together at Portland House in Marple for a taste of Caribbean culture as part of this year's
Black History Month (BHM) celebrations.
Over 50 People enjoyed a true carnival atmosphere with entertainment including music, singing and traditional 'hands on' drumming. There was also a chance to sample Caribbean food that included fried chicken, escovitched fish, plantain and dumplings.
Portland House is one of a number of places in Stockport that provides sheltered accommodation with additional care and support, known as Extra Care Housing (ECH). ECH, sometimes called 'very sheltered housing', helps older people to live independently whilst still having the security and privacy of their own home and offeres verying levels of care, service and facilities.
Councillor John Pantell, Executive Member for Adults & Health, attended that event and enjoyed talking to people and joining in the drumming session. He said,
"It was a fun event that also gave peole an opportunitu to find out about different cultures. Everyone had the chance to join in the
drumming session and it was great to see some of our older people having such a good time."
Anne Andrew a resident at Portland House said
"I have been really impressed by the event; the entertainment and food was amazing. It has been very enjoyable learning about a different culture, an absolutely lovely afternoon."
