Liverpool MP addresses Chinese elders

Louise Ellman, the Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament for Liverpool Riverside addressed guests at “Johnnie” Johnson Housing’s bilingual health, social care and housing conference on Friday 4 July 2008.
The event was held in partnership with Arena Housing and the Pagoda and Chinese Carers project, at the Pagoda Chinese Community Centre in Liverpool. Discussions highlighted the services available to the elderly in the local Chinese community and recognised the issues that affect them accessing mainstream services.
Louise Ellman commented: “The Chinese community in Liverpool is one of the oldest in Europe and it is very important that Chinese elders receive the services they need. This conference will help to achieve that.”
Mrs Ellman was joined by fellow speakers including Allan Chan, Director of Investment at Arena Housing, Tricia Grierson; Head of Retirement & Supported Housing at JJHT, Adrian Jones; member of CLG’s expert panel on housing & communities; acting convener of Birmingham’s Chinese Housing Group, Jan Lochyer; Head of Occupational Therapy at the Liverpool Disabled Centre, Pam Stopforth; Dementia Development Co-ordinator at PSS, Hazel Summers; Lead Officer of Liverpool Supporting People Programme and Janis Wong - a freelance consultant in ‘Extracare’ housing.
Georgina Tang, Area Manager for “Johnnie” Johnson Housing said: “Johnnie” Johnson Housing Trust recognises that one of the barriers for Chinese elders accessing mainstream services is a lack of awareness. The conference is to inform guests of what services are available to them that enable them to live independently and make informed choices that improve their quality of life.”
