Electrical safety checks

  • The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAW regulations)

This act states that employers have a duty of care to ensure that all electrical equipment is safe to use. It lays a clear responsibility to carry out checks on anything, which generates, stores, transmits or uses electrical energy.  All checks must be carried out by competent tradesmen.  The 1989 regulations also extend protection to anyone exposed to electrical danger from electrical equipment, including those not at work.

Emergency lighting

  • BS 5266-1:  Emergency lighting. Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises (British Standard)

This standard gives information and guidance on the categories of emergency lighting systems and their suitability for premises with different types of occupants.

Fire alarms and smoke detectors

  • BS5839: Testing & Maintenance 2002 (British Standards Institution)
  • BS5839: Testing & Maintenance 2004 (British Standards Institution)

These standards are comprehensive. They range specifications about the regular maintenance of the systems, to specifying the type of system based on the type of property.
