#Volunteersweek – Resident Rickie Crook shares his story

First Published: 08/06/2016

I’m a volunteer for SOAR (Southey Owlerton Area Regeneration). This is a lottery funded (£6 million) project. We primarily cover North Sheffield, including areas such as Chapeltown, High Green and Stocksbrdge to name a few. We do a lot of work with the communities and cover subjects such as:

Drink Wise, Age Well

Age Better

Smoke Free

Social Cafes

Diabetes

Peer mentoring / Social Isolation

Five ways to Well Being

My role is ‘Age Better Peer Mentor’, I visit and meet people who are socially isolated, this covers many forms, i.e. lack of mobility and illnesses such as depression. I enjoy volunteering as it gives me something to look forward and motivates me. I make lots of new friends and more importantly I hope I make a difference!
