Johnnie Johnson Housing joins in call to reopen energy bill support scheme
In a unified effort to address the growing energy crisis and ensure the well-being of their residents, 34 housing associations across the United Kingdom have collectively called upon the government to reinstate the £400 energy bill support scheme aimed at offering financial aid to nearly one million households without access to an energy supplier. Among these associations is Johnnie Johnson Housing, advocating for the rights of our residents to amplify the collective voice of those affected.
What was asked in the letter?
In a letter to Amanda Solloway MP, the minister for energy consumers, and Lord Callanan, the minister for energy efficiency, 34 housing associations asked three changes to support those most in need this winter:
1. Provide more targeted support through the Energy Bills Support Scheme and Energy Bills
Discount Scheme for winter 2023-2024 for those on low incomes and the 1.7m households
living in fuel poverty and are not registered for benefits.2. Expand eligibility for the Warm Homes Discount to include households on heat networks and without a direct relationship with an electricity supplier this winter.
3. Extend the application deadline for Energy Bill Support Scheme Alternative Funding from 31st May until 31st December 2023.
The support scheme, if reinstated, would not only provide essential financial relief to those most in need households but also contribute to the broader goal of reducing energy poverty and promoting sustainability.
