Residents at the Old Palace take a trip down Memory Lane

First Published: 09/02/2017

Down Memory Lane is a new collection of short stories, told and collated by the residents at The Old Palace in St Asaph. Over the last few months, the residents have been meeting at a coffee morning in the communal lounge to discuss and tell stories from their varied and fascinating lives.

The subject matters of the stories range across topics such as holiday experiences, being a woman in the RAF, how Ireland joined the Second World War and even memories of Johnnie Johnson himself.

The stories have now been collated into a book printed, copies of which are being sold to residents for £5, with all of the money raised being donated to the local hospice, St Kentigern’s. At the launch event alone, £90 was raised in about 30 minutes!

Down Memory Lane is not only a wonderful collection of stories, but demonstrates just how important it is for the stories and experiences of the elderly to be told and shared for future generations. The idea was conceived by Shelly Ross, Independent Living Coordinator at the scheme who was inspired by a previous edition of the book from the 80s.

Well done Shelly and the residents of The Old Palace!
