Helping residents get digital and staying connected, in partnership with Unilever

Johnnie Johnson Housing has partnered with Unilever to provide over 100 reconditioned laptops to selected residents. This activity will provide individuals, groups and communities across the North East and North West regions with an extra opportunity to use digital equipment that they may not have used before. The laptops will help to develop our residents’ digital skills as well as confidence being online.

Residents will be invited to submit a pledge outlining how one of these reconditioned devices will benefit them in their daily lives in addition to other information. We will also consider the individual circumstances of our customers such as current home set up.

Lucy Nixon, Communications and Marketing Manager, Johnnie Johnson Housing shared her excitement around the partnership:

“Having a functioning, good quality computer will give residents access to so many things and help them benefit from digital services. Some of our customers have never been able to get online and this could be a life changing device.”

The reconditioned laptops have been donated by Unilever as part of their ambitions to be carbon zero and reduce landfill. The devices have been used over the past three years by employees at Unilever and have now been reconditioned for our residents.

Kayliegh Thompson, Service Manager (Global) at Unilever commented:

“We’re really pleased to be able to support Johnnie Johnson Housing and their residents with this donation of reconditioned laptops. At Unilever, we believe that sustainability is about creating a better and more equitable world for all. When laptops and computers are recycled for a second life, it promotes a more sustainable and circular model for electronics that helps to reduce environmental impact whilst also reducing the digital divide by supporting more people to access digital resources and tools. It’s a win-win and a small step we can all take at home and in the workplace.”

Phil Nichols, Digital Engagement Lead at Johnnie Johnson Housing, said:

“Digital skills are such an important part of everyday life with many essential services only accessible via online sources. Once the laptops are with our residents, we are going to be on hand to offer help and support in person. Here at Johnnie Johnson Housing, we are keen to do all that we can to empower the people we support, to gain these vital skills and get more out of life online. We hope these laptops will allow our residents to make use of online resources and become more confident within the digital environment.”
