Personal Independence Payments (PIP) – Renewal Forms Now Easier to Complete

What is Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and who is eligible?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assists working age adults with mental or physical health conditions/disabilities. It offers a daily living rate and a mobility rate – claimants can be entitled to one or both. A successful claim for PIP is dependent upon the effect of the disability/condition upon the claimant’s life. It is not means-tested and offers between £26.90 and £172.75 per week. A person may be eligible if they:

  • Are 16 or over (N.B. no new PIP claims for those over state pension age are allowed – the person must claim Attendance Allowance instead).
  • Have a long-term physical or mental health condition/disability.
  • Have difficulty with everyday tasks and/or getting around and expect these to last at least 12 months from when they started.

What are the recent changes to the renewal process and what do you need to do?

  • From August 2023 – a new 6 page AR2 review form (for claimants who have reached pension age or who need to renew an ongoing 10 year PIP award) requires only brief information and any updates on the claimant’s condition. The AR2 form replaces the old 16 page long AR1 PIP award review form.
  • Most cases should not require face to face assessment with a healthcare provider, although this depends on individual circumstances.
  • PIP claimants due for review will receive a letter from the DWP instructing them what forms to fill in.
  • Claimants will continue receiving PIP during the review process.
