Diversity of roles in housing

Overall, the diversity of roles in the housing industry means that there is something for everyone, no matter what their background or interests are. Additionally, many of the skills and qualifications required for these roles are transferable from other industries. Also, there are often opportunities for career progression and development.

Aside from the traditional roles available in housing, there are also less traditional roles that you may not have considered. For example, many housing organisations now have Wellbeing teams that provide support to residents, including mental health services. There are also IT departments, responsible for the implementation and management of housing management software and technology. Additionally, finance roles are crucial to ensuring that housing organisations are able to manage their finances effectively, and there are communication and marketing roles that help to promote and raise awareness of the housing services on offer.

Transferable skills between industries

The beauty of the housing industry is that many of the skills required for these roles are transferable from other industries. For example, project management skills developed in construction or creative industry can be applied to project management roles in the housing industry. Sales and marketing skills from other industries can be applied to property sales and lettings roles in the housing industry. Customer service skills from the retail industry can be applied to resident service roles.

For over 20 years I worked in the finance and legal sector. Moving to a not-for-profit housing association I found that I was able to get stuck in with a variety of different tasks to develop and grow my existing skill set and learn new skills, both technical and soft skills. One of Johnnie Johnson Housing’s values is empowering, this has been evidenced and demonstrated in a number of different projects and task I’ve had the chance to get involved in. Over the past 18 months the organisation has delivered a wide number of changes and improvements. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is an exciting area here at JJH, as in service delivery you get many opportunities to improve colleagues’ day to day working environment.

In summary, the diversity of roles and job opportunities in the housing industry means that there is something for everyone. Whether you are interested in marketing, finance, property management, social services, or another area entirely, there is likely to be a role for you in the housing industry. Even if you are just starting out in a front-line role or looking to specialise in a particular area, there are many ways to develop your skills and advance your career within the industry.
