Update on cost of living payment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) outlines that the £900 payment will be issued in three instalments. The payment will be made to those on low-income benefits. The first payment of £301 to be made between 25 April 2023 and 17 May 2023, followed by the second payment of £300 in the Autumn and the third payment of £299 in Spring 2024.

The DWP confirmed that to be eligible for the first payment, a low-income benefit claimant must have been entitled to a payment (or later found to be entitled to a payment) of one of the benefits listed below:

  • Universal credit – for an assessment period that ended in the period 26 January 2023 to 25 February 2023
  • Income-based jobseeker’s allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Income support
  • Pension credit

The claimant should have been entitled to a payment for any day between 26 January 2023 to 25 February 2023. This also includes if there was no entitlement to one of these benefits where the award was calculated between one penny and nine pence. Claimants who have been later found to be entitled to a benefit within this period will also receive the payment. The payment will be made automatically in the same way as the payments for 2022/2023.

Tax claimants

Eligible tax claimants should have received a payment of tax credits for any day in the period 26 January to 25 February 2023. This is also valid in circumstances where entitlement is subsequently established for this period.
