Universal Credit update

Universal Credit (UC) is a new benefit for working age people that replaces a number of existing benefits and tax credits. It is designed to support people who have a low (or no) income with their basic living expenses and housing costs. The overall plan for UC was to be rolled out across the UK in stages; however the rollout is to be scaled back amid concerns about the migration to the new benefits system.

The Greenhouse Project

Creating our future We encourage our people to be pioneering - it's one of the four values that define how we work together to help our residents and customers. 

Head of Independent Living Tricia Grierson made this a reality when she was selected to join the National Housing Federation's Greenhouse Project. She was part of a team that developed new ways to adapt homes for people who are growing older - to offer them dignity and to help keep them safe.

Growing older is a gift

Yvonne Castle In her guest post on the Northern Housing Consortium blog our CEO Yvonne Castle shares her thoughts on why growing older is a positive thing, and how to really enjoy this time.

She questions why as a society we don't look more positively at ageing, suggesting that we need a culture that embraces ageing and the opportunity that it provides.

She discusses why needing less sleep and seeing the world through rose coloured spectacles can bring you joy, how 'zoning in' on happy faces can help us build more social connections and considers the ways we can all work together to support ourselves and our loved ones.

Yvonne Castle joins the Northern Housing Consortium Board

Yvonne Castle JJH Chief Executive Yvonne Castle has been voted onto the board of the Northern Housing Consortium (NHC) – a membership body that represents the views of housing organisations in the north of England.

Yvonne is pleased to join the NHC board, which was keen to benefit from her specialism in supporting older people. JJH is a market leader in independent living, providing affordable quality housing for older people, enabling them to live independently at home for as long as possible. Yvonne will share our philosophy of “living longer, living better” with the NHC to promote awareness and continue to identify solutions to address the deficiency in good quality affordable homes for independent living for older people.

Astraline expands to take on Peaks & Plains Housing Trust’s private telecare customers

Astraline logo Astraline has completed a deal to acquire the award-winning TrustLink service from Macclesfield-based housing trust Peaks & Plains.

Assistant Director, Astraline and Innovation Joe McLoughlin said, “We are absolutely delighted to have been successful in this deal – it’s an exciting enhancement to our existing services across the Cheshire East region. We have ambitious aspirations here at Astraline and believe that acquiring such a fantastic service is a key milestone in our growth and service development plans.”

Greater Manchester Housing Providers join forces to support the military community

Armed Forces Event Speakers Greater Manchester Housing Providers (GMHP) gathered today at the Imperial War Museum North to discuss how to support former armed services personnel and their families.

The inaugural GMHP Armed Forces Covenant event was hosted by Yvonne Castle, CEO of Johnnie Johnson Housing, and was attended by representatives from housing providers and local authorities from across Greater Manchester (GM).

The keynote speech was given by Andy Burnham, Mayor of Manchester, who spoke passionately about his personal mission to end rough sleeping in Greater Manchester. After speaking personally to people on the street, he says too many are veterans and as a society we are failing them which is shameful.

JJH takes the housing lead in helping make Manchester city carbon neutral by 2038

MCCB logo Work is being planned to improve the energy efficiency of JJH schemes, as part of our contribution to climate change initiatives.

JJH Executive Director, Homes and Services Ian Thomson is taking the lead on a cross-sector group on behalf of 14 other Manchester housing associations and recently presented proposals on how we can make a real difference to the climate change agenda.
